E-mail or electronic mail is one of the most popular uses of the Internet. E-mail is similar to other forms of correspondence, like letters and memos with the advantage of being fast and cheap (the cost of a local phonecall). You can send your e-mail whenever you want and the person who receives you mail can read it whenever she/he wishes to. To send e-mail you need to be connected to a server. When you sign up with an access provider you get one or more e-mail addresses. If you don't have a computer at home and only use the Internet at the college, you can get an e-mail address from an organisation like 'hotmail' or 'Fortunecity'. The message you send is routed from one computer to another and is passed through several mail-servers. It travels across the Internet to its destination and is deposited in the recipients electronic mail box waiting to be read. Your instructor now helps you to get an e-mail address, if you don't already have one and you will then be asked to send an e-mail to the following: [email protected].[email protected] Not everyone's address looks like these, some are just a string of numbers.
